Having diabetes increases the risk of developing Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), which results from damage to the small blood vessels of the retina. Poorly controlled blood sugars, high blood pressure and high cholesterol increase the risk of developing DR. Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) is a form of Retinopathy that affects the macula.

All diabetic patients should be screened regularly for DR. Timely treatment can prevent vision loss and even stabilise and improve vision for many people.
